Course Information
Description Integration of critical reading and academic writing skills. Successful completion of this course if taught at the upper (exit) level fulfills TSI requirements for reading and/or writing.

Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
Locate explicit textual information, draw complex inferences, and describe, analyze, and evaluate the
information within and across multiple texts of varying lengths.
Comprehend and use vocabulary effectively in oral communication, reading, and writing.
Identify and analyze the audience, purpose, and message across a variety of texts.
Describe and apply insights gained from reading and writing a variety of texts.
Compose a variety of texts that demonstrate reading comprehension, clear focus, logical development of
ideas, and use of appropriate language that advance the writer’s purpose.
Determine and use effective approaches and rhetorical strategies for given reading and writing situations.
Generate ideas and gather information relevant to the topic and purpose, incorporating the ideas and words
of other writers in student writing using established strategies.
Evaluate relevance and quality of ideas and information in recognizing, formulating, and developing a claim.
Develop and use effective reading and revision strategies to strengthen the writer’s ability to compose
college-level writing assignments.
Recognize and apply the conventions of standard English in reading and writing.

PSLO 6: Personal Responsibility Skills Integrates choices, actions and consequences in ethical

showing the independent application of ethical perspectives/ concepts to an ethical

Hawkes Learning software Foundations of English is required for successful completion of the course. It can be purchased at learn.hawkeslearning.com.

See the DENG 0410 Test and Assignment sheet for a detailed look at each unit of study. There are six units total, each with a test. Students must pass each assignment in the unit with a 70% in order to take the unit test. Each test can be retaken to improve the grade (if the original test grade is at least 40%.) There is a final exam which is cumulative. This class averages a test every 2-3 weeks, so successful completion of unit activities is essential in order to pass the course.

Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Please show up on time every day. Students with more than four absences in the course will receive an academic penalty to be determined by the instructor. Students with more than six absences will lose an automatic letter grade.
Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
